What To Wear On Picture Day: A Complete Guide For Every Parent

Here at Picture Day we’re committed to giving kids the opportunity and ability (within reason) to express themselves however they choose. It’s a special day of excitement and dread for families. A day when kids get to dress up and feel like a star! It’s also when parents have to contend with the pressure of making sure their child looks their best.

If you’re a parent who’s feeling the pressure of picture day, don’t worry! This guide will help you choose the perfect outfit for your child. With a few simple tips, you can make sure that your child looks their best and that you capture a timeless memory.

Expectations

First and foremost, you gotta remind your kids that they should check their outfit and hair before being photographed or even send them to school with a note asking the teacher to make sure they’re not looking busted. A few things to make  sure you communicate to your kid:

  • What you expect from them (a smile, groomed hair, etc)
  • What they should expect from the process. (New things are scary for kids!!)
  • That these pictures are important to you and/or gifts for family.

Consider the Background

You have to consider the background when choosing an outfit for picture day. We provide all schools with a Parent Letter that lets you know what color background you should expect! If the background is a neutral color, like white or gray, then you’ll want to choose an outfit with colors that will stand out. If the background is colorful or outdoors, then choose an outfit with more muted colors that won’t compete with the surroundings.

Obviously you want to avoid things like wearing white on a white background, blending into the backdrop. Wearing busy patterns can be distracting and take away from your child’s natural beauty. We’d recommend sticking to simple patterns or solid colors to help your child stand out.

Cozy is Key

Children can become fidgety and uncomfortable if they’re not wearing clothes that fit well or are too tight. Make sure to choose an outfit that’s comfortable for your child to move around in so that they can feel relaxed and confident during their photo shoot. Avoid outfits with things that can fall off or end up on the wrong side or spot throughout the day. We all love a good bow, but less is sometimes more. Try to steer clear of things like t-shirts with lots of text, slogans, logos, etc.

Details, Details, Details!

Adding layers to your child’s outfit can add depth and texture to the photo. A vest, cardigan or blazer can transform a simple outfit and add a touch of sophistication. Don’t forget to add some finishing touches to complete the outfit. A small accessory like a bow-tie, necklace or headband can add a little sparkle to the photo and create a timeless memory.

Remember, the most important thing is for your child to feel confident and comfortable. Hopefully with these tips, you’ll be able to choose an outfit that not only looks beautiful in the photo but also allows your child to express their personality and shine. First impressions are important, and you only ever get one!
